East Pacific Red
Body: These octopi are very small. Their head is about three times smaller than that of their eight legs. They grow to about 25 inches in overall length.
Coloring: Their main coloring is a redish color. Often it tends to be a redish-brown color. Like many other octopi they can change their coloring based on environment. Habitat: They tend to live along the west coast of Africa. They have also been spotted along the coast of California all the way up to the coast of Alaska. Behavior: These octopi are very smart. They have very good memories both long term and short term and they can problem solve. They also show very distinct personalities. Diet: They generally eat crabs, scallops, and clams. When they capture food they take it back to their home. They will often collect many different types of food and take them all back home where they will take their time eating it. They will put the shells outside of their home to signify that they are living there. Mating: The actual mating happens between August and September. The females hide there eggs in about 8 weeks so usually they deposit them in the early winter. The female will stay with her eggs until they hatch and then she will usually die. The males die soon after mating. |
