Seven Arm Octopus

Coloring: Their natural coloring is usually a red, orange, or brown color. They can change colors to blend into their environment. Habitat: This octopus species was not identified until 2002. They were originally found along the coast of New Zealand. Behavior: This octopi have a lot of similarities to the other species. They learn quickly and can control their pigment in order to blend in with their environment. Diet: These octopi hunt at night. They are able to sneak up on their prey due to the fact that they can blend in. They release a poison into the bodies of their prey that paralyzes them. They then bite through the shell of their prey with their large beak. They mostly eat mollusks and crustaceans. Mating: Males usually mate with more than one female. Males will soon die after mating is over. The females will fertilize the eggs with the collected sperm in about 4 weeks. She will then lay them in a crevice or a cave and stay close by to watch over and protect them. She keeps her eggs clean by blowing water over them and creating bubbles. The female will die before she even sees her eggs hatch. |
