Body: These are the largest octopi. They can grow to be up to 15 feet in length and 150 pounds. Their size depends on their environment and what they eat.
Coloring: Their normal coloring is a red or brown and they vary in shades. However these species relies on their ability to change color to blend in. They cannot move fast or hide in small places because of their size so they rely heavily on blending in. Habitat: These octopi live in the Pacific Ocean. They tend to stay at least 200 ft. deep but depending on their environment they might go deeper for protection and food. Behavior: They can adapt and learn things quickly. They are able to retain lots of information due to their advanced memories. These octopi do get scared easily. Because of their size they use ink more than the other species. Diet: Due to their enormous size these octopi hunt at night. They mostly eat crabs, clams, shrimp, and fish but they have been known to eat the small species of sharks. Sharks provide them with enough energy so that they wont have to hunt for the next couple of days. Mating: The male will mate with the female by placing a sack of sperm into her mantle. The female might carry the sperm sack for up to six months before her eggs can be fertilized and laid. The females usually have about 100,000 eggs. The females die when her eggs hatch while the males die usually a few weeks after mating. This species is the longest living of all of the octopi they usually live anywhere between 3-5 years. Only about 1,000 of the hatchlings survive. |
